What is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that shows how your website appears in search: the queries you show up for, how many people click, your average ranking position, and any technical problem keeping Google from reading your pages. If you want to know whether Google can even find your site, this is where you look.

It's the first thing we set up on any site, our own companies included, because it answers the questions owners actually ask: am I indexed, what am I ranking for, and why isn't a page showing up. Here's what it does and the few reports worth your attention.

The reports that matter

πŸ” Performance

The most useful screen. It lists the searches that bring you impressions, your clicks, your click-through rate, and your average position. Find queries where you sit on page two and push them up.

πŸ“„ Pages (indexing)

Shows which of your pages Google has indexed and which it skipped, with the reason. This is where you catch a page accidentally blocked or marked no-index β€” a shockingly common, quiet problem.

πŸ”Ž URL inspection

Paste any page address to see if it's in Google, when it was last crawled, and any issues. After publishing a new page, you can ask Google to crawl it here.

πŸ“± Experience and enhancements

Flags mobile usability problems, slow pages through Core Web Vitals, and whether your structured data is valid. Useful for spotting the technical issues that quietly cost you rankings.

How to set it up

  1. 1

Go to Google Search Console and sign in with the Google account you use for the business.

  2. 2

Add your site and verify ownership β€” usually a DNS record at your domain or a small file on the site.

  3. 3

Submit your sitemap so Google knows every page you want indexed.

  4. 4

Wait a few days for data, then check Performance and Pages monthly.

When you don't need to live in it

Search Console is worth having, but it's a diagnostic tool, not a daily obsession. Don't over-invest if:

Set it up once, glance at it monthly, and act on indexing errors immediately. That's the right amount of attention.

Where we fit

We set up Search Console, submit the sitemap, and watch the indexing and Performance reports for every client on the $597/mo plan β€” so a no-index slip or a stalled page gets caught fast, and we know which queries to push from page two to page one. It's part of how we run our own cleaning and HVAC companies.

Plans: $249/mo (site, AI lead capture, hosting), $597/mo (adds the SEO content engine and attribution), and from $1,750/mo (adds a custom CRM and reputation automation). Month-to-month, you own everything, free working demo in 48 hours.

We don't post stock testimonials. On a 15-minute call we screen-share the real dashboards behind our own businesses — live leads, rankings, and the exact page that produced each one. See the proof →

Common questions

Is it free?

Yes, completely. You verify you own the site, usually with a DNS record or a small file, and Google starts showing data. There's no paid tier. Every business with a website should have it.

How is it different from Google Analytics?

Search Console is about how people find you in search β€” queries, clicks, indexing. Analytics is about what they do once on your site. They answer different questions, and most sites use both.

How do I use it to fix problems?

Check the Pages report for indexing errors, use URL inspection to test a specific page, and review Performance for queries on page two you can push higher. It tells you where to focus instead of guessing.
