How does SEO work?

SEO works in three steps: Google crawls your site, stores it in an index, then ranks it for each search based on relevance, quality, and trust. When someone searches "plumber near me," Google scores every eligible business on how well it matches, how close it is, and how trusted it looks — then shows the winners. SEO is the work of making your pages and profile the ones it picks. Here's how each step turns into a phone call.

We run our own cleaning and HVAC companies on this, so we'll explain it the way we'd explain it to another owner — in terms of what you control and what brings the call.

The three steps, plainly

  1. 1

Crawl. Google's bots follow links across the web and read your pages. If your site is slow, broken, or blocked, the bot can't read it — and what it can't read, it can't rank.

  2. 2

Index. Google stores and understands your pages — what each one is about. A page about "AC repair in [city]" gets filed under those topics so it can surface for that search.

  3. 3

Rank. For each search, Google orders results by relevance, distance, and trust.

The searcher then clicks, calls, or asks an AI assistant — and a well-built site turns that visit into a booked job instead of a bounce. Ranking gets you seen; the site closes it.

What Google weighs for local results

🎯 Relevance

Does your profile and your pages match what the person searched? Right categories, listed services, and pages that name the exact job and city all raise relevance.

📍 Distance

How close you are to the searcher. You can't move your shop, but accurate service-area settings and city pages help Google place you in the right searches.

⭐ Prominence

How trusted and known you are — reviews, consistent listings, and links. This is the one you build over time, and reviews carry most of the weight for local businesses.

What you control, and why it takes months

You don't control Google's algorithm or your competitors. You do control the signals that stack in your favor:

It takes months for competitive terms because Google has to crawl new pages, decide they're trustworthy, and watch how searchers respond before promoting them. Profile and review work moves faster — which is why we start there.

When the work isn't the SEO

Understanding how SEO works also tells you when it won't help. Don't pour money into ranking if:

Common questions

How does SEO actually work?

Google crawls the web, indexes pages, then ranks them for each search by relevance, quality, and trust. SEO makes your pages and profile the ones it shows.

What does Google use to rank a local business?

Relevance, distance, and prominence. Reviews and a complete Google Business Profile carry a lot of the prominence weight.

What can I control?

Your pages, site speed and mobile experience, your profile, and your review flow. Not the algorithm or competitors — so you stack the signals you own.

Why does it take months?

Google has to crawl new pages, trust them, and watch how searchers respond before ranking them for competitive terms. Profile and review work moves faster.
