What is CTR?

CTR — click-through rate — is the share of people who click your listing or ad out of everyone who saw it. If 100 people see your Google result and 5 click, your CTR is 5 percent. It measures how appealing and relevant your listing looks, separate from how good your actual service is.

For a service business it's a practical number: it tells you whether you're earning clicks from the searches you already show up for. A low CTR usually means your title, description, or position is letting you down. Here's how to read it, what's "good," and how to raise it.

The math, plainly

CTR = (clicks ÷ impressions) × 100

An impression is one time your listing was shown. So 10 clicks from 500 impressions is a 2 percent CTR. You'll find clicks and impressions in Google Search Console for organic results, and in Google Ads for paid ones.

CTR is one half of the picture. The other half is what happens after the click — whether that visitor becomes a booked job. A high CTR with no calls means the page or your follow-up is the problem, not the listing.

What counts as a good CTR

Organic, top result

~25–30%

The number one organic spot typically pulls a quarter to a third of clicks. It falls off fast: position five is often in the low single digits. This is why ranking position matters so much.

Google Ads, local service

~4–6%

A solid, well-targeted local campaign lands here, and tight ones go higher. A CTR under 2 percent usually means your targeting or ad copy is reaching the wrong people.

Your own trend

The real benchmark

The most useful comparison is you, last month. Benchmarks vary wildly by industry and query. If your CTR is climbing while position holds, your listings are getting better.

How to raise it

When CTR is the wrong thing to chase

A high click-through rate feels good, but it's a vanity metric on its own. Don't optimize for it if:

Track CTR alongside the conversion that follows it. The pair tells the truth; either one alone can mislead you.

Common questions

How do you calculate CTR?

Divide clicks by impressions and multiply by 100. Ten clicks from 500 impressions is a 2 percent CTR. Search Console shows it for organic results, Google Ads for paid.

What's a good CTR?

It depends. The top organic result often gets 25 to 30 percent; local service ads land around 4 to 6 percent. Compare against your own past numbers more than any benchmark.

How do I improve it?

Match the search in your title and description, give a clear reason to pick you, earn review stars, rank higher, and for ads tighten targeting. Relevance and position are the main levers.
