What goes in a solar contract template

A solid solar contract spells out the exact system, the price, who handles permits and interconnection, what the homeowner can expect it to produce, and what the tax credit does and does not cover: the parties and license number, the kW DC size, panel and inverter make and model, the total price and payment schedule, the estimated annual production, the warranty terms, and the state-required cancellation language. Get all of it signed before you order a single module.

We build websites and lead engines for solar companies, not legal forms, so treat this as a checklist rather than legal advice. A residential array is a five-figure purchase that depends on permits, the grid, and a tax credit — three things a vague contract will not protect you on.

The sections every solar contract needs

☀️ System specifications

System size in kW DC, panel make/model/wattage, number of modules, inverter or microinverter brand, racking, and any battery. Naming the exact equipment prevents the "I thought I was getting premium panels" fight.

📈 Estimated production

State the estimated annual kWh from your design and label it an estimate. If you offer a production guarantee, define the measurement window, weather adjustment, and remedy. Shading and weather vary — say so.

💵 Price and payment schedule

Total price, deposit, and draws tied to milestones — contract, permit approval, install complete, PTO (permission to operate). Never fund work that has not happened.

🧾 Tax credit and incentives

State that the federal clean energy credit and any state/utility incentive are claimed by the homeowner, depend on their taxes, and are not guaranteed by you. You are not their tax advisor.

🔌 Permits and interconnection

Spell out who pulls permits, files interconnection, and manages PTO with the utility, and that the timeline depends on the AHJ and utility — parties outside your control.

🛡️ Warranties

Separate your workmanship warranty from the manufacturer's panel and inverter warranties, and a roof-penetration warranty for the mounting. State the length and what voids each.

The clauses that keep you out of trouble

Solar disputes cluster around three things: production, timelines, and the tax credit. A good contract addresses all three head-on:

When a free template is enough

You do not need a custom contract drafted from scratch for every job. A solid template is fine when:

Pay an attorney for a one-time review once you offer financing, PPAs, or leases, do commercial work, or operate across states. A few hundred dollars on the contract is cheap next to one production-guarantee or interconnection dispute.

We don't post stock testimonials. On a 15-minute call we screen-share the real dashboards behind our own businesses — live leads, rankings, and the exact page that produced each one. See the proof →

Where we fit

A great contract closes the installs you sit down for. Getting more homeowners to sit down for is the other half, and the part we handle. We build the solar website and SEO that put you in front of homeowners researching panels, with 24/7 AI lead capture so the consultation request never goes to voicemail. Sites start at $249/month with a free working demo in 48 hours, month-to-month, and you own it.

Common questions

What should a solar contract include?

Parties and license number, exact system specs, total price and milestone payments, who handles permits and interconnection, the estimated annual production, the tax-credit language, workmanship and equipment warranties, and your state's cancellation rights.

Should it guarantee production?

Only if you define it. State the estimated annual kWh, and if guaranteed, set the measurement period, weather adjustment, and remedy. An unqualified guarantee that ignores shading and weather invites disputes.

How should it handle the tax credit?

State that the federal and any state/utility incentives are the homeowner's to claim, depend on their taxes, and are not guaranteed by you. Keep the price standing on its own so the deal survives if they cannot use the full credit.
