Reputation management is the ongoing work of earning reviews, watching what people say about you online, responding to it, and shaping what shows up when someone searches your name. For a local service business it is far less mysterious than the agencies make it sound: it is mostly Google reviews, your Google Business Profile, and how fast and how well you reply.
We run a cleaning company in Tucson and an HVAC company in Sacramento, and reviews are the single most-watched number in both. Below is the version we run ourselves — what matters, what to ignore, and the cases where you do not need to pay anyone a dime.
The engine of the whole thing. A simple, consistent ask after every finished job — by text with a direct link — is worth more than any tool. Velocity matters: a steady trickle beats a sudden pile, which Google can read as gamed.
Knowing when a new review lands on Google, Yelp, Facebook, or trade directories — so nothing sits unanswered for a week. A free Google alert and Business Profile notifications cover most one-location businesses.
Replying to every review, good and bad, within a day or two. Responses signal an active, attentive business to both Google and the next reader. A short, human reply beats a copy-pasted template.
Making sure the first page of results for your business name is yours — site, profile, reviews — not an old listing or a complaint forum. A well-built site and an accurate profile do most of this work.
Reputation is the one lever that helps search and sales at the same time:

Paid automation earns its keep when manual asks slip through the cracks — when you are doing enough jobs that "I will text them later" turns into a month of missed reviews.
Review prompts after each job are built into our Grow in Google plan at $597/month. Full review automation — automatic text and email asks, routing, and reply workflows — is part of Own Your Market from $1,750/month, alongside a custom CRM. If you just need the site and AI lead capture to start, Start Getting Leads is $249/month. Everything is month-to-month and you own it.
Reviews are also a ranking input, so this overlaps with local SEO and your home-services SEO work. If your real problem is missing the calls those reviews generate, the AI receptionist catches them. Contractors can see the trade-specific version on our reputation management for contractors page.
We don't post stock testimonials. On a 15-minute call we screen-share the real dashboards behind our own businesses — live leads, rankings, and the exact page that produced each one. See the proof →
Reply publicly, calmly, and briefly. Acknowledge it, offer to make it right offline, and stop. The reply is for the next person reading, not the upset one. Arguing in public does more damage than the review did.
If it breaks Google's policies — spam, a competitor, no real interaction — you can flag it, and sometimes it comes down. Genuine-but-negative reviews almost never do. The durable answer is to outweigh it with real recent ones.
No. Paying for reviews, even with a discount, violates Google and FTC rules and can get your profile penalized. Ask sincerely, make it one tap, and the honest ones come.
Send your company name and city — we'll confirm your market is open and build a working demo within 48 hours, review automation included. Free, no card, no commitment.
