How to start an event rental business

To start an event rental business you need a business license and LLC, a sales-tax permit, liability and commercial auto insurance, a focused first batch of inventory, and a way to take bookings. Most owners start with $10,000 to $50,000, the bulk of it inventory, and grow by reinvesting profits into whatever books out first.

We help with the website and marketing part — but most of this you can and should do yourself. Below is the practical order to do it in, plus an honest note on when you don't need us yet.

The steps, in order

1. Pick your lane

Tables and chairs and tents, bounce houses and inflatables, upscale lounge and linens, or audio/staging. Each has different customers and insurance. Start narrow where local demand is strongest.

2. Register and insure

Form an LLC, get an EIN, register for a sales/use tax permit (rentals are taxable in most states), and line up general liability plus commercial auto if you deliver. Inflatables usually need extra coverage and sometimes a state inspection.

3. Buy inventory that pays itself off

Buy what rents every weekend in your area first — a popular tent size, tables, chairs, or a couple of clean bounce houses. Track utilization and reinvest in whatever books out fastest. Avoid niche items that sit in storage.

4. Sort delivery & logistics

A trailer or box truck, a cleaning and repair routine, and a clear delivery-window policy. Damage waivers and a deposit protect your inventory. Logistics quietly decide whether the business is profitable.

5. Set up bookings & get found

A website with photos, prices, and instant quote requests; a complete Google Business Profile; and relationships with planners and venues. Most rentals are booked from a phone after a "party rental near me" search.

A rough first-year budget

LLC, permits, EIN, sales-tax registration$300–$800
Liability + commercial auto insurance (year)$1,500–$4,000
Starter inventory (focused category)$8,000–$30,000
Trailer or used box truck$3,000–$15,000
Website, booking, and Business Profile setup$0–$3,000
Typical all-in startup~$13,000–$50,000

Your numbers will differ with how much inventory you buy and whether you already own a vehicle. The point is to start lean, prove demand, and reinvest.
