To bid a painting job, measure the paintable area, estimate how many labor hours it takes at your crew's pace, multiply those hours by your loaded hourly rate, add paint and materials with a markup, then layer in overhead and profit. That four-part formula — labor + materials + overhead + profit — is the whole game. A square-foot shortcut is fine for a fast number, but the hours-and-materials math is what keeps you from losing money on a job that looked easy from the driveway.
We build websites and lead systems for painters and other trades, and we run our own service companies the same way. The painters who survive are the ones who bid from numbers, not gut feel. Here is the method, with real ranges for 2026.
Walls, ceilings, trim, doors, and railings each take different time. For interiors, measure wall length times ceiling height; for exteriors, measure each elevation. Count doors and windows separately — trim is slow, finicky work and it is where rushed bids lose money.
A clean repaint runs roughly 150–200 sq ft of wall per hour per painter for rolling. Prep — patching, sanding, taping, caulking — often eats as much time as the paint itself. Heavy prep can double the hours. Walk the job and write prep down as its own line.
Multiply hours by a billed rate of $40–$75/hour. That rate is not the wage; it covers payroll taxes, insurance, the truck, and idle days. If you pay a painter $25/hour, you still bill closer to $55 to stay solvent.
A gallon covers about 350 sq ft per coat. Price the actual gallons, primer, tape, plastic, and sundries, then mark the total up 10–30 percent for your buying and hauling time. Add a coat for deep color changes over light walls.
Add 10–20 percent for overhead (phone, software, ads, fuel) and a separate profit margin of 15–25 percent on top. If profit lives inside your hourly rate, you can not see it — break it out so you know what each job actually earned.
Three bedrooms, a hallway, and a living room — walls only, light prep, one color, two coats over an existing similar shade.
Sanity-check against the square-foot rule: $3,000 over 1,200 sq ft of floor is $2.50/sq ft, which sits right in the normal interior range. When your detailed build and your rule-of-thumb agree, you can quote with confidence.
You do not need an estimating app or an agency to bid painting jobs. A tape measure, a spreadsheet, and the formula above will out-bid most of your competition. If you are a one-person shop with steady referral work, keep your money — spend it on better brushes and a sprayer before you spend it on us.
Where bidding breaks down is not the math — it is the volume of leads. If you only get two calls a week, every bid feels life-or-death and you start cutting price to win. The fix is more shots on goal: more people finding you, more quote requests, so you can bid at your real number and walk away from the bad ones.
We don't post stock testimonials. On a 15-minute call we screen-share the real dashboards behind our own businesses — live leads, rankings, and the exact page that produced each one. See the proof →
We do not write estimates for you. What we build is the front end that fills your calendar with bid requests: a painting website with 24/7 AI lead capture from $249/month, the SEO content engine at $597/month, and the full CRM stack from $1,750/month. Month-to-month, you own everything, and the first working demo lands in 48 hours before you pay.

Measure paintable area, estimate labor hours at your crew's pace, multiply by your loaded hourly rate, add marked-up materials, then add overhead and profit. Interior repaints commonly land at $2 to $6 per square foot of floor, but build the number from hours and materials so you know your margin.
Billed rates run $40–$75/hour in 2026 once you load in taxes, insurance, the truck, and overhead. The bid rate is not the painter's wage — it has to cover the full cost of having that person on the job plus profit.
Quote homeowners a flat price built from an hourly estimate — it is what they want and it rewards efficient work. Reserve true time-and-materials for unknown-scope jobs like heavy prep or repairs.
Send your company name and metro — we'll confirm your market is open and build a working demo within 48 hours. Free, no card, no commitment.
