Auto repair business plan: a simple template

An auto repair business plan needs seven sections: an executive summary, your services and pricing, a local market analysis, a marketing plan, operations and equipment, your team, and the financials. You do not need a 50-page document — a lender wants startup costs, monthly expenses, projected revenue, and a break-even date. Everything else is context.

We run our own home-service companies, so we write plans the way an operator would, not a consultant. Below is what goes in each section, the money numbers that matter, and an honest note on when a one-page plan beats a long one.

The seven sections, with what to write

1. Executive summary

One page: who you are, what the shop does, the market gap you fill, and how much money you need. Write it last, put it first.

2. Services and pricing

General repair, brakes, diagnostics, oil and tires, or a specialty like European or fleet. List your labor rate and typical ticket size — specialization usually means a higher margin.

3. Local market

How many shops are within a few miles, their reviews, and the gap you exploit — faster turnaround, honest diagnostics, a make you specialize in. Real competitor names, not "the industry is large."

4. Marketing plan

Google Business Profile, reviews after every job, a site that ranks for "brake repair near me," and a referral offer. This is the section most plans hand-wave — make it concrete.

5. Operations and equipment

Bays, lifts, a diagnostic scanner, alignment gear, shop software, and parts suppliers. Note hours and turnaround targets — they decide how many cars you clear a week.

6. Team

ASE-certified techs, a service writer, and who answers the phone. Labor is your biggest ongoing cost and the bottleneck on how much work you can take.

7. Financials

Startup costs, monthly fixed expenses, average ticket, cars per day to break even, and a 12-month projection. This is the section a lender reads first.

The money numbers that matter

Startup cost

$50,000–$250,000+

Lifts, diagnostic equipment, tools, build-out or lease deposit, insurance, and first months of rent. Leasing an existing shop is cheaper than building from scratch.

Break-even

Cars/day target

Monthly fixed costs divided by average gross profit per car. Knowing this number tells you whether you are growing or just busy.

Getting found

from $249/mo

A site with AI lead capture starts at $249/mo and you own it. Put a real marketing line in your plan — empty bays cost more than ads.

When a one-page plan is enough

A long plan is for borrowing money. If that is not you, keep it short. A one-pager is enough when:

Write the plan a lender needs, or the one page that keeps you honest — not a document for its own sake.

Where we fit

The marketing section of your plan is where we help. A hand-built auto repair site with AI lead capture is $249/mo; the SEO content engine that ranks you for "brake repair [city]" is $597/mo. Free working demo in 48 hours, month-to-month, you own the site and domain.

Common questions

What should the plan include?

Summary, services and pricing, local market, marketing, operations, team, and financials with a break-even point.

How much to open a shop?

Commonly $50,000–$250,000+ depending on lease vs. build-out. Lifts, diagnostics, and rent are the big lines.

Do I need it for a loan?

For a bank or SBA loan, yes. Self-funding small, a one-page plan is often enough.

How do shops get customers?

Repeat work and referrals first, then a profile, reviews, and ranking for "brake repair near me."
